Costa Rica
Costa Rica is overpriced. Even though the tourist infractructure is well developed and that it receives thousands of tourists, the prices are much higher than they should be considering the other Central American countries.

The one thing I truly remember is how sweet and delicious the fruit was….like they were infused with sugar or something. Learned a lot about growing bananas and coffee. I think before you go anywhere on vacation you should decide why you are going rather than expect the world to entertain you and create an experience for you. Keep expectations moderate and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Costa Rica is like anywhere else. Yeah, there’s some high priced tourist destinations..but off the beaten path and you’ll see and experience some of the most beautiful scenery and wildlife on the planet and WAY cheap….maybe someone should google couchsurfing dot com. If you think Costa Rica is overpriced then you must have went on a pre-determined tour package that takes you only to tourist hotspots that ARE indeed overpriced….and YOU did not do your homework. You can easily see the best of what Costa Rica has to offer on a budget..and they do NOT deserve to be featured on this page.

My personal opinion is if you really want to experience Costa Rica than you need to travel on a budget or you’ll end up staying in places that may as well be in Miami…..you didn’t like it here? You weren’t really HErE- GET it?

I just got back from Costa Rica a week ago and I must say, it was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been. Sure, if you’re planning on staying in 5 star resorts you should expect it to be expensive, over-priced, even. But isn’t that true for any place you visit? From an eco-tourism standpoint: it was phenomenal! We saw unique animals, went through all different stages of the rain forest, got to see Costa Rica like a local would, and it didn’t cost much at all! This should definitely be taken off the list. If you’re looking for an inexpensive adventure, I would recommend Costa Rica anyday.

Costa Rica has been one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been……oh yeah, i didn’t stay at an ‘all enclusive hotel’ I actually experienced the country….. get a clue

HOW can anyone not like Costa Rica? I guess it’s the way one travels. If you’re staying in a lavish house on the side of the hill facing the ocean, it’s amazing. The food and drinks are cheap. YOu can’t really beat $2 cocktails and $7.50 arroz con pollo. The people are incredibly friendly and most people understand English. For those who didn’t like it - sorry you missed out.

Well If you haven’t traveled at all or expect everything to be like Mexico “Was” then forget it.
I have been to Jamaica, Philippines and Costa Rica. There is thefy and robbery in every country. When an American come to their country, they expect to make some good money off of you. So yes beware but also have fun barttering with them. If you shy then you will suffer from fear and they can sence it.
Bu Always have fun where ever you go enjoy the Life style remeber your in their country.
Like “Mike” above said, get off the beaten track and enjoy they spirit of the people they will really be blessed with your presence. It is a gift to have an American as a frined in most of the countries that are suffering.
Dont look for Embassy suite where there is little to offer in countries.

I live, work and play in Costa Rica and I have to agree that it’s overpriced in many, many ways. Yes, the fruit is quite cheap and the fruit shakes are delicious, but anything that is imported (and that’s alot) is really bloody expensive. I’ve been here for three months now and I haven’t experienced the “tico-friendliness” at all. On the contrary, there’s alot of agressive drivers, there’s alot of xenofobia (especially against Nicaraguans, but also towards “rich” tourists, so I agree with Bob) and there are alot of rude and plain dumb people. Lindsay says that you can’t beat 7.50$ arroz con pollo. That’s rice and chicken folks. And no, it’s not organic chicken. Is this the “authentic food” backpackers drool over these days? Try Guatemala, try Panama. Or save money and drive up to the coast in the US. It’s alot safer, the roads are not washed away by torrential tropical rains, and I guarantee you that it will be lighter on your budget.

I had a bad experience with a prostitute in Costa Rica. I picked up a pretty girl in a bar and took her back to my hotel room. But she must have spiked my drink because I fell asleep and woke up in the morning with a very sore and sticky bottom. I questioned the security guard and he said the girl I had taken back to my room was a well known transexual who preys on tourists. At least she didn’t steal my passport or credit cards, but there was no cash in my wallet. Be warned!

$2 a cocktail and $7 an arroz con pollo?! haha Thats expensive for us costarricans, an arroz con pollo is worth maximum $3 hahah, For bob: racists? Bro in Costa Rica there r a lot of white people, a lot of everything, racists?! are u nuts. where did u go? to the indian reserve or what?! Probably they told u that we the costarrican people hate governments like the US Government because of the many battles u have with the rest of the world… we r a peaceful country with no army so many people here don’t understand how is to live in a country that is constantly invading others and messing with other countries laws and traditions. Thats all. Bush was a dick u know. For patrick organic chicken what the fuck?! Hell yeah its organic, we don’t feed our chickens all the shit that ur country does. Have u watched the movie Food Inc? They talk about what? How ur country feeds ur people with crap? yeah i think it does. If u don’t want to come here then don’t ever come back, and u need to know that social classes here r very distinctive, hatred towards nicaraguans comes from the lower class. At least we don’t kill them in the border u know, like ur country does. OH YEAH and go to guatemala sure nothing will happen to u, too bad that it is the most insecure country of Central America! IF U WANNA GET abducted go right to Guatemala the Maras will surely welcome u with their arms open! haha. And to the whore guy, things like that only happen to people like u, people that pay for sex, people so disgusting that can’t notice the difference between a transvestite and a woman hahaha. This country is for people that love nature, people that come here to c the country side, to visit the rain forests, the many beaches that this beautiful country offers. Not to stay in a Marriot in the city with transexuals and bad company. And yeah if u r one of the many tourists that visit this place for drugs and sex, hell yeah that we will be racists, mean, and aggressive.

Costa Rica IS overpriced, We have a home near Quepos that we built in 1995 and we are down there 3 to 5 times a year. The confiscatory tax structure and bloated bureaucracy of their government, state owned monopolies, financial instutions and limited competition major corporations have driven the costs for everything except rice and beans thru the roof. Everything else is cheaper in the US even fruit in some instances. Good fish and shrimp are cheaper at Trader Joe’s and Trader Joe’s is not as cheap as Costco. Hardware prices even at EPA are higher than Lowe’s and Home Depot. Resorts and lodges with a few exceptions are rediculously priced and some of the eco or wildlife lodges charge a couple as much for spartan accomodations and poor food as a room at the Four Seasons, actually more than a midweek rate at the Four Seasons in Las Vegas.
Furniture, carpet, clothing, chemicals, fertilizer, tools, cement, auto parts, electrical equipment and electronics are 40% to 60% more than stateside. Pharmaceuticals used to be a good deal but now though they are generally cheaper than straight purchase in the US the cost exceeds nominal copays on run of the mill stateside health insurance policies.
Anyone that owns land here thinks it’s worth double or more than a calculable value. t
They seem to think they are going to hit the jackpot and retire to a life of leisure if you express an interest in thir property. Even with the development bust they think in terms of the out of sight prices they heard of 4 to 5 years ago.
This has had a negative effect on the Ticos. They are no where as genuine, outgoing and happy as they were 10 years ago. They don’t smile as much and they tend to turn on the charm only when they think it will enrich them. Crime is up and law enforcement is down. Theft is rampant and even though the police have wittnesses, action is rarely taken. The exception is traffic cops of course. Warnings about wearing no jewelery and how to protect you hand bag as well as what not to leave in your parked car are the same as are given in Nairobi or the worst parts of Rio. And this is not limited to San Jose it’s in the suburbs and any fair sized town.
There used to be a civility and politeness as well as a sense of pride, dignity and dress that transended all levels of their society, but it is mostly gone now. Their respect for one another and those they deal with in the course of their daily activities is close to non existent. There is a definite “don’t give a shit” attitude especially among the younger working population.
For a country that makes such big displays and propaganda of their environmental efforts, and policies, they are one of the trashiest countries in the western hemisphere. Their rivers are the most polluted foul sewers I have ever seen. Take a walk on the beach in front of our house and you would not believe the trash that makes it down to the ocean and is deposited by the tide. Bottles, bags, bras, toys, motorcycle helmets, shoes, diapers, syringes, parts of furniture and houses, any and every kind of plastic thing you can imagine. It is amazing especally after a big storm and early in the rainy season.
Some how, some way they have to turn this around, The comments I have heard from tourists in traveling around to tourist spots in the last month are not positive and the majority of these were European. If the tourists decide the value isn’t there and the “natives” aren’t friendly, the biggest industry, the only industry sustaining Costa Rica, will collapse like a house of cards. It will be ugly.
Is Costa Rica overpriced? You bet it is and it is very vulnerable. They have a president whose idea of how to solve their fiscal irresponsibility is to tell the Chinese she wants $340,000,000 from them “because they have it”. If the house of cards does come down you could very easily see the likes of Ceasar Chaves make a move on the government thru some proxy or even worse. With no army and their pacifistic nature the Ticos could be rolled up and chained in 5 days. Then of course they would have to cry for Uncle, that dasturdly war monger, to come bail them out as has happened in the past.
I have loved these people and thought they were the friendlies people on earth, but that love is fading and the friendly title is not being worn there any more. If this change and the irritant of the high cost of everything is affecting me the way it is, imagine the affect on the casual tourist that dosen,t have a vested interest in the country.

I just returned from a 14 day R&R in Costa Rica. I am very disappointed. I had wanted to go there for more than 10 years. I had the idea that maybe I would live there someday. No way! I am absolutely shocked at how over priced nearly everything is in Costa Rica. Prices in the grocery store are the same or higher than in the United States. Take local beer for example. In the regular grocery store a local beer is sold for just about $1 each, with the price of a six pack right at $6. Restaurants in tourists areas are absolutely out of their minds. I saw a bowl of ceviche in Monteverde for $10. Just around the corner from this place, I did find a place with mostly locals. They sold ceviche for just under $3 a bowl. I met a local Tico in Manuel Antonio who told me that one day he was very hungry and considered ordering some french fires from a hotel restaurant at the beach….$10 for a small order of fries. Too many prices in Costa Rica’s restaurants resemble prices in airports. Even the restaurants with only/mostly locals had prices that surprised me. For example, a plate with some beans, rice, and a meat costs about $5. Is this cheap? I live in Austin, TX and I can tell you that I can find a plate of food at lunch time for about the same price. My last dinner was at a local restaurant and for a 1/2 of roasted chicken they charged $7.00 Is this cheap? Again, when I think about prices in Austin, I say this is not what I would expect in a Central American country. After Costa Rica I was in Dubai for one day. I stopped in a grocery store and could not believe that prices were lower many times than those in the Costa Rican grocery store. Even some of the fruit in Dubai cost less than Costa Rica.
I think the thing that bothers me most is all about my visit to Costa Rica is the American expats running businesses who will tell you that they know how to live for 40% less than in the United States, but charge (B&B , for example )prices like in the states, and then actually brag about “staying under the Costa Rican government’s radar” with how they run their business because technically they are breaking the law. Meaning, they are not legally allowed to run the business, they are legally required to have more employees than they do, and other issues.
I have visited 29 countries. Iraq is at the bottom as #29, Costa Rica is #28, then there is a lot of empty space on the list up to where the rest of the countries stand side by side in terms of favorites.
Every criticism I have read about Costa Rica is now personally true or is easy to relate to in some way. Over priced is an understatement. I saw the litter on the beaches and was shocked. Espadilla Beach in Manuel Antonio, for the record, did not have any litter, but every other beach was badly littered. I had locals remind me to be careful on the beaches and elsewhere of thieves. I have never had so many strangers ask me to watch their things while they went in the water ( people looked at me and my friend and felt like they could trust us and they were right). On my way back to the states I met a lady from Costa Rica who now lives in Dallas. She said she would never live there again. She feels much safer in Dallas. She told me about visiting her relatives and how they all live behind high fences because the crime rate is so high….and she listed small cities, not even large or touristy ones.
Costa Rica is the first country I have ever visited for vacation that I do not plan to visit again. (Iraq is in a different category b/c I live and work here.) …After reading most of the comments I am going to side with the gentleman who said he owns a house in Quepos and visits several times a year.
Deep breath…Ecuador next.

Costa Rica has a petty crime problem but is not that overpriced? Two years ago I payed $22 a night for a double in San Jose 3 blocks from its central market. It was not a palace yet it was safe and comfortable enough.

Yeah, perhaps if you compare CR with Nicaragua, but Nicaragua has an annual per capita income of less than $1000! Let’s be real here.

I am in Costa Rica right now, and can’t wait to leave. After travelling through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, Costa Rica is by far my least favorite destination. Hardly anyone speaks English, no locals at least (don’t let people tell you otherwise. I was lost for 3 hours in Alajuela today and lost yesterday because no one could give me directions).
Costa Rica is a massive tourist trap. All they care about is exploiting their natural wonders to make a buck off the rest of the world. The people are not as nice as other Central American countries, and for the first time ever in Costa Rica (outside Liberia), someone made an attempt at robbing me.
A huge thing that is getting on my nerves is, COSTA RICA DOES NOT HAVE ADEQUATE STREET SIGNS OR NAMES and hardly any directional signs to help you navigate the roads. They just assume that you know where to go. I asked the owner of the hostel about that today and he said, “Costa Ricans don’t use street signs so we don’t have many.”
All the excursions are way overpriced! Go to Guatemala or Nicaragua to do any canopy tours, volcano hiking, ATV riding, whatever it may be.

Visited Costa Rica for the 1st time for business last week; one word - unimpressed. It’s true there are very limited street signs, building addresses are basically non existent, and believe I only saw one traffic signal between the airport and hotel. Now, I went with an open mind, but that quickly closed on the first night when the hotel “forget” they had previously assigned my room to ME, then gave the keys to that room to someone else! 1230am, (while i am sleeping) the door to my hotel room opens! The hotel apologized, and removed that night’s charge from my bill. That all being said, you can see why I, after that experience, I would have needed a major WOW factor to impress me with CR. Because I was there for business, I did not do any touristy things, no volcano, no beach. I saw the real CR. The only think I can say is, been there, done that, wont be going back.

THERE IS NO HOT WATER AND YOU WILL SOMETIMES FIND IMPROPERLY INSTALLED SUICIDE SHOWERS
IT IS COMMON TO SEE LOOSE WIRES STRUNG TOGETHER W/TAPE CONNECTED TO SOME FLIMSY EXTENSION CORD
NOW GO PLUG YOUR TV LAPTOP FRIG ETC INTO THAT
ONE PLACE I WAS LIVING THE ELECTRIC CORD ON MY BRAND NEW FRIDGE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE I WAS SLEEPING GOOD THING IT WOKE ME UP AND NOT ONE OTHER THING WAS ON
AFTER A HEAVY RAIN THE WATER TURNS SHIT BROWN AND OFTEN DOES NOT CLEAR FOR A LONG TIME WHEN IT IS RAINING ALOT WHICH IS OFTEN
SO NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO GET DRINKING WATER AND WOULD YOU REALLY WANT TO WASH IN THAT
MABE THAT IS WHY BOTH MEN AND WOMEN ARE BATHED IN STRONG NASTY SMELLING PERFUMES
AND THEN THERE ARE THE BARS AND GATES AND BARBED WIRE TOPPED FENCES
WHICH STILL IS NOT A REAL DETERENT AS I HAVE HAD MY HOME BROKEN INTO TWICE REMEMBER WHATS MINE IS THEIRS SO IT IS REALLY NOT STEALING
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE IT HAPPENS IN GOOD AREAS AVERAGE AREAS AND LUXURY GATED SECURED COMMUNITIES AND IS USUALLY THE ONES YOU ARE PAYING TO PROTECT YOU NO ONE HERE IS EXEMPT
UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU CAN REALLY TRUST LIVING IN YOUR HOME 24/7 DONT PLAN ON TAKING ANY EXTENDED TRIPS
YOU MAY NOT HAVE A HOME TO COME BACK TO
EVER HERE OF SQUATTERS THEY ARE A BITCH TO GET RID OF ONCE THEY HAVE SETTELED IN
AND YES THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CULTURE HERE WHATSOEVER
MEXICO HAS A BEAUTIFUL RICH CULTURAL HISTORY AS DO MOST OF THE OTHER CENTRAL AMERICAN COUNTRIES I GUESS IT WASHES OUT THE FURTHER SOUTH YOU GO
THESE PPL VALUE NOTHING THEY HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE AND RANK HIGH ON A SCALE OF ANIMAL ABUSE OFTEN STARVING THEIR DOGS AND CATS AND POISONING THEM WHEN THEY GET TIRED OF THEM
FOLKS I AM NOT EXAGERATING ANYTHING I HAVE TALKED TO SO MANY OTHER EXPATS AND ALL HAVE THEIR OWN HORROR STORIES NOT ALL POST ABOUT THEIR UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE
AFTER 2 YEARS I HAVE HAD IT I DID APPLY FOR RESIDENCY BUT THESE ASSHOLES NEVER CONTACTED ME AS I CHECKED THE FAX NUMBER I HAD GIVEN THEM RELIGIOUSLY SO I HAVE LOST OUT ON ALL THE HARD WORK AND MONEY I SPENT
IDK NOW THEY ARE SAYING THAT US CITIZENS HAVE TO RENOUNCE THEIR CITIZENSHIP THEY CAN ALL GO FUCK THEMSELVES THESE ARROGANT THEIVING BASTARDS MY SOURCE OF INCOME IS A GOVT PENSION AS ARE MANY OF THE EXPATS LIVING HERE SO HOW DOES THAT WORK
